______________
by Girl Crush

The genesis for "Girl Crush" came out of my own memory of being thirteen and realizing I was queer. This was in 2009 when kids would use the word "gay" to insult or punish. I was scared to come out, even to myself, and did not do so until many years later.
In the film, my protagonist Ivy starts in a similar situation, she instead embraces her newfound identity with excitement and confidence. Many queer coming-of-age films focus on oppression and marginalization of the LGBTQ community. While these stories are vital to our existence, so are the stories of unabashed acceptance. Ivy's story is one many can relate to, regardless of their orientation.
Also like Ivy, I have a younger autistic brother. Growing up, I felt ashamed of my resentful feelings towards my brother. He often got special attention from my parents that would leave me feeling isolated, bitter and then I felt guilty about feeling bitter or resentful! I longed for a movie that represented my complex relationship with my brother in an honest yet compassionate portrayal.

Given my life experiences, I know I have the insight and talent to make this unique yet universal coming-of-age movie.
